How to get to Alcudia, Mallorca
Alcudia is around 1hr 20 minutes from Palma airport and you have a number of options to choose from to reach this part of Mallorca. Depending on your budget, the easiest and most stress free approach is to arrange a private transfer. Particularly if you are travelling with children, this can be the easiest option to make sure you don’t have to worry about luggage etc. We chose to use public transport to travel from Palma to Alcudia and honestly this was a mistake. We had several suitcases and a pram for our child and the bus was extremely busy.
Instead, we would suggest using a private transfer like Welcome Pickups. You can book in advance, get picked up at the airport and go directly to your hotel, avoiding the hassle we unfortunately walked into on our trip.
Alternatively, if you are comfortable driving, you could also rent a car, which could also be a fairly inexpensive option. The downside with renting a car is that it can be a more stressful experience. Please take into consideration that you will be driving on the right side of the road and sitting on the left side of the car before committing to this option.
Finally, you can also get from Palma Airport to Alcudia by public transport. A bus runs throughout the day and will drop you at various points throughout the area. There is a luggage compartment beneath the bus for storing your suitcases while you travel as well. Any bus we took in Mallorca took contactless payment on board so you don’t necessarily need to get tickets in advance for this option.

Why stay in Alcudia?
Choosing the best place to stay in Mallorca can be a difficult task. There are great options for families; city breaks, relaxing getaways and nightlife so it comes down to the type of holiday you would like. Alcudia is one of the most family friendly areas of Mallorca. There are a huge range of hotels in Alcudia to choose from, many of which are beachfront and offer all inclusive options etc. We found Alcudia to be very suitable for young children as all restaurants have high chairs and changing facilities.
The beaches in Alcudia are also very accessible for young children, as the water is shallow and doesn’t generally have a strong tide. As we were travelling with a toddler, we chose to stay at a hotel in Alcudia, Innside by Melia on our recent stay. This part of Mallorca is around an hour from Palma and is easily accessed by motorway. If you are unsure about where to stay in Mallorca, we have put together this guide breaking down the type of holiday that each part of Mallorca tends to offer.

One thing with Alcudia is that it is a little bit spread out, which can make it slightly more difficult with young kids but still very manageable. This is also an advantage in a sense too as you can mix up your days a bit between the Old Town, Ciutat Bianca/Playa de Muro and the Port area so you will never feel like you are very limited to the same area. The buses also run throughout this area every 15 minutes or so.

Things to do in Alcudia Mallorca
There are two main areas that you will likely spend time at while you are in Alcudia – Port D’Alcudia and Alcudia Old Town. These two areas are where you will find the majority of bars and restaurants and this is where you will find the best things to do in Alcudia itself.
1) Visit Alcudia Old Town Markets
Every Tuesday and Sunday, there are street markets held in the Old Town and this is a great way to experience some of the local culture, as well as purchasing some nice locally produced items. The markets are quite busy so we would advise going there quite early on these days.
Beyond that, the Old Town is worth spending some time in anyway and some of the best restaurants in Alcudia can be found here. You can get here by bus quite easily but they do tend to be busy on market days. If you are taking a pram on board you will also be asked to fold it up so just bear that in mind before taking the bus with a young child.
While you are in the Old Town we would highly recommend going to Basico restaurant for dinner, which has a beautiful outdoor terraced seating area. The specialty here is steak and the chef cooks the steaks on a barbecue pit in the courtyard itself. We would also recommend going for a coffee at Malloria, which again has a really nice outdoor seating area.

2) Take a beach day in Alcudia
Mallorca is renowned for its great beaches and luckliy, Alcudia has some great options right on your doorstep. The best beach in this area is definitely Playa Muro. This beach is a bit further down the coast towards Can Picafort but you can easily get there by bus from Alcudia in around 10 minutes.
The water here is crystal clear, there was no strong tide when we visited and the water stays shallow for at least 50 metres, making it very safe as well. One of the best beach clubs in the area is also located along this beach, NuMa Mallorca, which is worth visiting on any beach day.
The other main beach is Playa Alcudia, which runs up to the Port, where many of the best restaurants in Alcudia are found. This beach is great for families, with designated areas for storing prams, as well as being wheelchair accessible. The sand here is quite compact, there are a huge amount of loungers available and there is a playground available for families alongside the beach.

3) Explore the Port D’Alcudia
Alot of your time in Alcudia will be spent around the port area. Alcudia Port is where you will find the best bar and restaurant options in Alcudia. Most mornings, we would take a walk to the port and grab an iced coffee at Cana Marce before walking along the beach.
In the evenings, there are a great variety of restaurants to choose from in this area. We would recommend trying out Picaro, which is a great Italian restaurant and the staff here are really friendly as well. We also like Mango Thai, as well as Can Punyetes for some tapas and local cuisine.
4) Take a trip to the water parks
One of the best things to do in Alcudia is to take a trip to one of Mallorca’s waterparks. There are lots of great water parks to choose from in Mallorca. If you are staying in Alcudia, the closest water park is Hidropark, which is in Alcudia itself. Alternatively, you could also go to the Western water park if you were taking a day trip to the Magaluf area. This is the largest waterpark in Mallorca. Finally, you could also try Aqualand in Arenal, which has some of the biggest slides in Mallorca.

5) Take a day trip from Alcudia to Soller & Valldemossa
One of the best things to do in Alcudia, is to use it as a base to explore the rest of the island. Mallorca is not a huge place so you have lots of opportunities to see what the island has to offer. Our favourite day trip from Alcudia was this one, which took us from Alcudia to Valldemossa, Soller & Port de Soller in one day.
Valldemossa
This day trip has a number of pick up points available and from there you will travel directly to the first stop, Valldemossa. Valldemossa is a mountain side town with charming cobblestone streets lining the area. There are lots of great shops in Valldemossa and it is a great place to sit outside with a coffee to relax. If you would like to visit a greta cafe, grab a window seat in Barbaflorida cafe and enjoy the surrounding views of the town, with those beautiful mountains in the background.
Soller & Port de Soller
After visiting Valldemossa, your next stop will be Soller, famous for its vintage tram that runs all the way to Palma. The tram is the main attraction here and can often sell out well in advance. Thankfully, this tour includes a tram ride from Soller to Port de Soller, which will be your final stop on the day.
Port de Soller is a picturesque seaside port that is very similar in style to the French Riviera. Unfortunately, you don’t get to stay here for very long on the day trip. If you have the time, we would definitely recommend booking a hotel in Port de Soller and spending a night here to really enjoy it.
6) Take a road trip to Southern Mallorca
If you want to find the best beaches in Mallorca, head to the South. The areas surround Santanyi and Cala D’or are lined with some of the best beaches in Europe and should definitely be on your list of things to do in Mallorca. One thing to note is that a number of beaches are only accessible via sets of stairs/down hills. With that in mind, they are not easily accessible for anyone using a wheelchair or if you are visiting with young children in a pram etc.
There are very few public transport options or tours that go from Alcudia to Santanyi/Cala D’or so we would recommend renting a car if you want to explore this region. Cala D’or is very suitable for families and has some great food & drink options all within a short walking distance of each other.
For breakfast/brunch we would suggest trying Noir, which has a great range of pancakes, waffles and acai bowls. We would also recommend Patron for Mexican food or else Pappa for pizza and a great selection of Italian dishes.

Best beaches near Cala D’or & Santanyi
If you are looking for the best beaches to visit in Mallorca, this is the area to stay. In Cala D’or itself there are 3 main beaches, Cala Petita, Cala Esmerelda and Cala Gran beach. These beaches are quite accessible and are suitable for families.
Outside of Cala D’or, we would suggest visiting the beaches below. All of these beaches are within a one hour drive from Cala D’or and Santanyi depending on where you stay.
- Cala Llombards
- Cala Mondrago
- Cala des Moro
- Cala S’Almunia

7) Take a day trip to Palma de Mallorca
Mallorca is renowned for its beach resorts and rugged mountains but it also has one of Spain’s best cities – Palma de Mallorca. Taking a trip to Palma de Mallorca for a day is a must do when you are staying in Alcudia. There is a direct bus that goes from Alcudia to Palma de Mallorca in just over an hour and it runs throughout the day.
There is alot to see and do around Palma itself, including the iconic Seu Cathedral. The city also has lots of great shopping and being a port city means you can do some great boat trips and catamaran cruises like this one. You can read our complete guide to how to spend a day in Palma here to help you plan your trip.

8) Take a boat cruise in Palma de Mallorca
One of the big advantages of visiting Palma is that it is a city by the sea. Once you are done exploring the city, we would highly recommend going on a boat tour. This tour runs for 5 hours and includes two stops at Cala Vella or Portals Vells, as well as a cove nearby.
The boat tour includes the option to go for a swim or snorkel if you feel comfortable doing so and you also get to enjoy a BBQ on board. This is definitely worth adding to your list of things to do in Alcudia/Mallorca.
9) See the dolphins at sunrise
Another great thing to do in Alcudia is to take a sunrise boat trip to watch the dolphins. This is a great option for families and offers a unique opportunity to see dolphins in their natural habitat. This tour departs from Port d’Alcudia and is well worth the early start to the day.
Breakfast is included on board the catamaran and it also includes some sailing time around the area. This really is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see the dolphins, as well as a beautiful sunrise in Mallorca.

10) Watch the sunset from Cap de Formentor
The final thing to do in Alcudia that we would recommend is a sunset trip to Cap de Formentor. This is a spectacular viewpoint perched high up on the hills of the Tramuntana mountain range. This tour is just a short drive from Alcudia and you honestly won’t find a better sunset viewpoint in Mallorca than this one.
The tour we took ran directly from Alcudia beach and included stops at Es Colomer viewpoint, as well as Atalaya de Albercutx watchtower. Once you reach the watchtower, you will receive a glass of wine with some strawberries and get time to take photos of the incredible views below.
If there was one tour we would highly recommend taking in Alcudia it would be this one.
